Biography

Leading voice in Black speculative fiction for over 20 years, called 'the Octavia Butler of horror.' Winner of American Book Award, NAACP Image Award, British Fantasy Award, Bram Stoker Award, Shirley Jackson Award, and World Fantasy Award. 'The Reformatory' (2023) won Los Angeles Times Book Prize and multiple major awards. Executive producer of Shudder's 'Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror.' UCLA professor teaching Black Horror and Afrofuturism courses. Collaborates with husband Steven Barnes on screenplays including Jordan Peele's 'Twilight Zone.'
